He became the third Indian bowler to achieve this position after Jasprit Bumrah and Ravi Bishnoi. The 34-year-old bowler earned this honor based on his recent performances. Varun is also performing well for India in the 2025 Asia Cup.

He has jumped 3 places to number one in the ICC T20 bowling rankings, becoming the first bowler in history to do so.
