The Indian cricket team has registered some of the biggest scores in T20I history, including the second-highest overall and the highest score among all nations playing ICC T20. With the help of some of the best batsmen in the game, here we take a look at the five biggest team scores registered by Team India in the shortest format.
1. India 297-6 vs Bangladesh, Hyderabad 2024
Indian batsmen put up a valiant performance against Bangladesh bowlers in the third T20I of the three-match series at home in October 2024. Invited to bat first against Bangladesh, Team India scored 297-6 in their 20 overs in the dead-rubber. Opener Sanju Samson scored his maiden T20I century, scoring 111 runs off 47 balls with the help of eight sixes, including five consecutive sixes in an over from Rishad Hussain. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav scored 75 runs off 35 balls with the help of eight fours and five sixes, while Riyan Parag (34 off 13 balls) and Hardik Pandya (47 off 18 balls) also displayed their mastery in the slog overs as India registered their highest T20I score.
2. India 260-5 vs Sri Lanka, Indore 2017
Team India scored 260-5 in 20 overs in the second T20I of the three-match home series against Sri Lanka at the Holkar Stadium in Indore in December 2017. Skipper Rohit Sharma was the top scorer in the innings with 118 runs off just 43 balls and also smashed a century off 35 balls. Rohit hit 12 fours and 10 sixes while his opening partner KL Rahul himself hit eight huge sixes during his brilliant innings of 89 runs off 49 balls.
India couldn't score many runs in their final two overs but their score of 260 is the highest ever team T20I score in the world. Later in the match spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav bundled out Sri Lanka for just 172 runs.
3. India 244-4 vs West Indies, Lauderhill 2016
In August 2016, in the first T20I match of the two-match series at Lauderhill, India scored 244-4 in 20 overs while chasing the target against West Indies. Chasing 246 to win, Rohit Sharma scored 62 off 28 balls and KL Rahul, batting at number four, scored 110* off just 51 balls. MS Dhoni also played a quick innings of 43 off 25 balls while batting at number five, but Dwayne Bravo's tight bowling in the final over helped West Indies win the match by one run.
4. India 240-3 vs West Indies, Wankhede 2019
The encounter took place at the Wankhede Stadium in December 2019. Batting first, Indian openers Rohit Sharma (71 off 34 balls) and KL Rahul (91 off 56 balls) hit quick half-centuries, adding 135 runs in 11.4 overs. After Sharma was dismissed, then Indian captain Virat Kohli took the centre stage and scored an unbeaten 70 off just 29 balls with the help of four fours and seven sixes. The score proved to be a match-winning one for the 'Men in Blue', as bowlers Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav helped them win the series by a 2-1 margin.
5. India 237-3 vs South Africa, Guwahati 2022
In the second T20I of India's three-match home series against South Africa in October 2022, the Indian team scored 237-3 in 20 overs after being invited to bat first. Opener KL Rahul hit five fours and four sixes in a stormy innings of 57 runs off 28 balls and shared an opening partnership of 96 runs with captain Rohit Sharma. At number three, Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 49 off 28 balls while Suryakumar Yadav played a high-scoring innings by scoring 61* off 22 balls.
