Bangladesh's ODI captain Tamim Iqbal has surprised the cricket world by announcing his sudden retirement. Afghanistan were defeated in the first ODI by Afghanistan on Wednesday, after which Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from international cricket.

Bangladesh's ODI captain Tamim Iqbal has surprised everyone by suddenly announcing his retirement from international cricket three months before the 2023 World Cup in India. In this way Tamim Iqbal's 16-year international career came to an end. Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement at a press conference in Chattogram on Thursday.
Bangladesh had to face defeat at the hands of Afghanistan in a rain interrupted match on Wednesday, 5 July. Bangladesh Cricket Board has not announced the name of ODI captain in place of Tamim Iqbal. Shakib Al Hasan captains Bangladesh in the T20 International format while Liton Das is in charge in Tests.
Tamim Iqbal, 34, had retired from T20 International cricket around this time last year. Iqbal played his last Test match against Ireland in April against Bangladesh. Tamim Iqbal made his international debut in 2007. He scored a half-century in Bangladesh's historic victory against India in the 2007 World Cup.

Bangladesh's most successful batter with 8313 runs from 241 ODIs at an average of 36.62, including 14 centuries and 56 fifties. Tamim's decision to retire from ODIs and Tests comes almost a year after he announced his retirement from T20Is on June 17, 2022. In Tests, Tamim is next only to Mushfiqur Rahim with 5134 runs.
