Which advanced technologies are being used in IPL 2025

IPL is no longer limited to just fours, sixes and excitement. Technology keeps a keen eye on every corner of the field, whether the players are on the field or the umpire sitting thousands of kilometers away. Yes, technology is the real superstar in today's IPL match, which keeps an eye on every ball, every decision and every action. Let's know, which are those technologies that are making IPL even more advanced and how these are proving helpful in showing even the smallest things clearly to the umpire sitting far away.

1. DRS

Decision Review System (DRS) is a technology that gives the player a chance to challenge the umpire's decision. When a player is out and he feels that the decision is wrong, he can take DRS. Three special techniques work under this.

Hawk-Eye: It shows where the ball fell, where it hit and whether it was heading towards the wicket or not.

UltraEdge: Which captures the sound of the slightest touch of bat and ball.

Ball tracking: Which tells whether the ball was going towards the wicket after hitting the pad or not. All three together help the third umpire to take the right decision, whether he is on the field or sitting thousands of kilometers away.

2. SpiderCam

spidercam

Spidercam is a camera that flies in the air with the help of wires and gives a great aerial view of the field. With this, every movement of the batsman, fielding position and action during running can be seen from above. This camera makes the match more exciting not only for the umpire but also for the spectators and the commentary team.

3. LED Stumps

 led stumps

LED stumps are a new and smart technology that has now replaced the old wooden stumps in IPL. These stumps and bails have sensors installed inside them. As soon as the ball hits the stumps or the bails move even a little, they immediately glow with red light. This allows the third umpire to clearly know whether the ball has hit the stumps or not and whether the bat was inside the crease or outside. Especially in close decisions like runouts or stumpings, this technology gives quick and clear results, that too without any doubt.

4. Smart Replay System

Now a system has been introduced in IPL through which the third umpire gets clear and instant replay of every angle. This is called smart replay system. With this technology, the umpire does not have to wait much and the decision is made quickly. Fans also do not have to get bored, the replay comes quickly and the decision is made in a jiffy. This system brings every important angle on the screen immediately with the help of special cameras and software.

5. Player Tracking System

In this technology, GPS and motion sensors are fitted on the player's body or clothes. When the player runs, fields or throws, these devices track his every movement - like what was the running speed, how much distance was covered, how fast was the throw etc. This data is also used to create amazing animations that appear on TV and also help in analyzing the fielder's performance. Meaning, now not only the coach but also millions of fans can clearly see the hard work of every player.

Why was PSL removed from Dream11, cricbuzz and fancode?

The reason for the removal of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 matches from Dream11 is the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed more than 25 people, including Indian tourists. The attack further escalated diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, resulting in India imposing several sanctions, including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and a ban on Pakistani citizens.

Due to this situation, India's leading fantasy sports app Dream11 and PSL's official streaming partner FanCode stopped coverage of PSL 2025. Dream11 quietly removed all PSL matches from its contest list on April 24, 2025, indicating a standstill in sporting and diplomatic relations between the two countries. The move was also influenced by public sentiment, as seen in some posts on X, demanding Indian fantasy apps to stop promoting PSL.

This is not the first time this has happened. Earlier in 2019 and 2020, Dream11 had suspended PSL competitions citing solidarity with the Indian armed forces and public sentiment after the Pulwama terror attack.

PSL streaming on FanCode stopped

Fancode, the Indian digital platform that holds the exclusive online streaming rights for PSL 2025, has suspended its live coverage of the league. From April 24, PSL matches will reportedly not be streamed on the platform. The move comes as a direct result of the Pahalgam attack and is expected to have a severe impact on the tournament's digital audience, especially Indian and global viewers who watch matches via Fancode.

Dream11 removed PSL matches

Following the Palgram attack, Dream11 - India's leading fantasy sports app - has removed all PSL 2025 matches from its app and website. This has also ended any association with the Pakistan Super League on the fantasy platform, further distancing the league from Indian viewers.

The PSL 2025 player draft focused on players who were not sold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, reflecting the close relationship between the two leagues.

Why is KKR struggling in IPL 2025?

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) performed brilliantly in IPL 2024 and won the title, but their road in IPL 2025 has not been easy. With five losses in eight matches, KKR's current situation is worrying. Here are five major reasons why KKR is struggling this season

1. Shreyas Iyer Release

KKR won their third title in 2024 under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, but the decision to release him before 2025 was shocking. Ajinkya Rahane was made the new captain, but his lack of strategy and lack of effective leadership on the field proved to be detrimental for KKR. Shreyas Iyer, who is now the captain of Punjab Kings, showed excellent form by scoring 263 runs, raising questions about KKR's decision.

2. KKR Performance at Home Ground

Eden Gardens, which has been KKR's fortress, has become a source of tension for them this season. Three defeats in four home matches, including a crushing 39-run defeat against Gujarat Titans, have shaken their confidence. Rahane also expressed his displeasure over the pitch conditions, which did not suit their spin-centric strategy.

3. Poor shot selection by batsmen

KKR's batting has been unstable this season. The early dismissal of Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the recent match against Gujarat Titans and not scoring a single boundary in 36 balls in the middle overs shows their strategic disorientation. The decision to send young batsman Angkrish Raghuvanshi at number 9 was also incomprehensible. Ajinkya Rahane may have scored 200 runs, but he did not get enough support from the other batsmen.

4. Experienced players are not in form

KKR relied on 36-year-old experienced players like Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, but both of them have performed averagely this season. Narine did not take any wicket in six of the recent 10 matches and his contribution with the bat was also limited. Russell played a short innings of 21 runs against Gujarat, but his failure at crucial moments put KKR in trouble.

5. Strategic and selection mistakes

KKR retained their spin strength, but their bowling attack lacked depth. Chetan Sakariya was included after fast bowler Umran Malik was injured, but other fast bowlers like Anrich Nortje did not look fully fit. Apart from this, losing an influential opener like Phil Salt and Quinton de Kock's failure to perform as expected also caused their problems.

Chennai Super Kings sign Dewald Brevis for IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most successful franchises of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has signed young and talented South African batsman Dewald Brevis for the IPL 2025 season. This contract has been signed in place of injured fast bowler Gurjapneet Singh, who was ruled out of the tournament due to injury.

Brevis, known as 'Baby AB' due to his aggressive batting and comparisons with AB de Villiers, has been signed by CSK for Rs 2.2 crore. The move is believed to be a strategic decision for CSK to strengthen the middle order and balance the team, especially when captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is also struggling with injury.

Dewald Brevis is an explosive batsman and useful spin bowler, famous for his aggressive style in T20 cricket. He has played 81 T20 matches so far, scoring 1787 runs at an average of 30.62 and a strike rate of 145.27. His highest score is 162 runs, which shows his batting ability. Apart from this, he has also taken 24 wickets, so that he can prove to be valuable to the team as an all-rounder.

Brevis made his T20 international debut for South Africa in 2023 and since then he has been attracting the attention of the cricket world with his talent. In the IPL, he has previously played for Mumbai Indians, where he scored 161 runs in 10 matches in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Although his performance with Mumbai was not good, CSK has expressed confidence in him considering his talent and youthful enthusiasm.

Gurjapneet Singh Ruled Out of IPL 2025 Due to Injury

Chennai Super Kings announced that Gurjapneet Singh has been ruled out of IPL 2025 due to injury. The five-time IPL champions wished him a speedy recovery.

The importance of Dewald Brevis for CSK

The CSK team is facing many challenges at the moment. The injury of captain Rituraj Gaikwad has affected the team's batting order, and the exclusion of Gurjapneet Singh is a setback for the bowling. In such a situation, the arrival of Brevis can give CSK depth in the aggressive batting middle order, which is an important part of CSK's strategy. Apart from this, his off-spin bowling will also show wonders, especially on spin-friendly pitches like Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Why was Ryan Rickelton given not out even though he was caught?

Ryan Rickelton got a second lease of life during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday (April 17) however he was dismissed by Pat Cummins in the 7th over of the match with Zeeshan Ansari taking the catch safely.

While SRH were celebrating their second wicket after the dismissal of Rohit Sharma following his quickfire 26, Ansari didn't overstep but the Hyderabad side suffered a major setback as the umpire declared the delivery a no-ball.

Varun Chakraborty questioned the no-ball rule

Varun Chakravarthy disagreed with the decision of the third umpire. He questioned the fairness of the rule and said that the bowler has not done anything wrong. Varun Chakravarthy said that bowlers should not be punished with no-balls and free hits.

If the keeper's gloves come in front of the stumps, it should be considered a dead ball and the keeper should be warned so that he does not do it again No-balls and free hits! What did the bowler do? Think out loud what you all think Varun Chakravarthy wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

What are the rules of MCC?

According to Law 27.4 of cricket, if the wicketkeeper changes his position before receiving the ball, the umpire has the authority to give a no-ball or wide.

According to the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), Law 27.3 states that: The wicketkeeper shall be fully behind the wicket at the striker's end from the moment the ball comes into play until the moment the ball bowled by the bowler touches the striker's bat or body or passes the wicket at the striker's end or the striker attempts to take a run.

It states, If the wicketkeeper violates this Rule, the umpire at the striker's end shall signal a no ball as soon as the ball is bowled.
