5 Best Bowling Performances in India vs Australia Boxing Day Test

Australia and India have played many classic Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches on Boxing Day Tests. Played in the festive atmosphere of the holidays, most of these matches have seen the bowlers of both sides dominate. Celebrating the glorious history of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, here we take a look at the five best bowling performances in Boxing Day Tests between the two sides since 1999.

1. Jasprit Bumrah (6-33)

jasprit bumrah bgt

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah bundled out Australia for just 151 at the MCG in December 2018, giving his side a massive 292-run lead at the halfway stage of the match. With Australia aiming to get close to India's score of 443-7, Bumrah dismissed Marcus Harris and then Shaun Marsh with one of the finest slower deliveries seen in recent times. Bumrah also picked up the wickets of Australia's key batsmen Travis Head, Tim Paine and lower-order batsmen Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood to finish with figures of 6 for 33 in just 15.5 overs. Bumrah picked up three more wickets in the second Australian innings, including that of Aaron Finch, as Team India won the match by 137 runs.

2. Ben Hilfenhaus (5-75)

ben hilfenhaus australia

Australia's Ben Hilfenhaus started the 2011-12 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series brilliantly, dismissing Gautam Gambhir at the MCG on Boxing Day, followed by Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni and then taking the big wicket of tailender Ishant Sharma. His spell ended India's chances as the visitors were bowled out for 282 from 214-2, giving Australia a 51-run lead after the first innings.

3. Anil Kumble (5-84)

anil kumble test

Indian captain Anil Kumble restricted Australia to 343 in the first innings after the hosts posted 135-0 in the morning session on the first day of the Boxing Day Test in 2007. The legendary spinner turned the tide in India's favour by dismissing the well-settled Phil Jaques and Australian number four Michael Hussey in quick succession. Anil Kumble also dismissed the dangerous Andrew Symonds and Adam Gilchrist in the space of three overs to take 5 for 84 in 25 overs.

4. Brett Lee (5-47)

brett lee test

Australian legend Brett Lee got his first Test cap during the Border-Gavaskar Test match on Boxing Day in 1999. The then 23-year-old pacer celebrated the occasion by demolishing India's star-studded batting line-up with his speed and aggression. Taking the field at the MCG, Brett Lee got his first Test five-wicket haul by dismissing Rahul Dravid and then Indian opener Sadagopan Ramesh. In one of his comeback spells, the Australian cricketer demolished the Indian tail-enders and took 5 wickets for 47 runs in 18 overs.

5. Pat Cummins (6-27)

pat cummins test bgt

Australia pacer Pat Cummins bowled 34 overs in the first innings of the 2018 Boxing Day Test against India in Melbourne. The veteran pacer picked up three wickets against aggressive batsmen like Cheteshwar Pujara and Mayank Agarwal as India posted 443-7 on the second day. With Australia facing a huge deficit of 292 runs at half-time of the match, Cummins created an outside chance for his side by ripping apart India's top order. The pacer picked up four top-order wickets in the space of just eight balls, including the prized wickets of Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and then-Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

BGT: 5 Best Batting Performances by Indians in Boxing Day Test

The Boxing Day Test is set to begin in a few days and India will be looking to get back to winning ways to take an unassailable lead in the ongoing series. The visitors have not lost a Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in their last two Australian tours and will be looking to register a hat-trick of wins when they take on Australia this weekend.

This iconic venue has been the stage for some unforgettable performances from India. As Rohit Sharma's side prepare for the fourth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, let's take a look at the top five highest scores made by Indian players at this historic ground.

1. Sachin Tendulkar

sachin tendulkar bgt

Sachin Tendulkar scored a century in the 1999 Boxing Day Test. Australia made 405 in their first innings with contributions from Michael Slater (91) and Ricky Ponting (67). India's batting order faltered, but the Little Master scored 116 while no other Indian batsman could go beyond 31. The Men in Blue could only manage 238 in the first innings. Australia set a target of 208 in the second innings. India faltered again, were bowled out for 195 and lost by 180 runs.

2. Ajinkya Rahane

 ajinkya rahane bgt

After India were all out for 36 during the 2020 Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, Rahane scored 112 off 223 balls in the second Test of the series after Australia were bundled out for 195 in the first innings, providing stability to the Indian innings and helping them gain a lead. India bundled out Australia for 200 in the second innings and chased down the target with ease, winning by 8 wickets.

3. Virender Sehwag

virender sehwag bgt

Virender Sehwag was brilliant with his innings on Boxing Day in 2003. Sehwag scored 195 runs off just 233 balls and provided a solid foundation after India's top order collapsed. India scored 366 in the first innings, but Australia posted a challenging 558 thanks to Ricky Ponting's 257. In the second innings, India could only manage 286 despite Rahul Dravid's 92 and Sourav Ganguly's 73. Australia won the match by 9 wickets

4. Cheteshwar Pujara

cheteshwar pujara bgt

Indian star Cheteshwar Pujara has been India's most successful batsman in Tests and his Boxing Day innings in 2018 is a perfect example of it. In the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2018-19, the veteran scored 106 runs off 319 balls, with Virat Kohli (82) making crucial contributions. In reply, Australia were bowled out for 151. After achieving the target, India won the match by 137 runs.

5. Virat Kohli

virat kohli_bgt

The 2014 Boxing Day Test in Melbourne was part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Australia batted first and scored a mammoth 530 runs thanks to Steve Smith's 192 and Ryan Harris' 74. India had a mountain to climb, but Virat Kohli showed his toughness and class. In the first innings, Kohli scored 169 runs off 272 balls and shared a brilliant partnership with Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane added 147 runs. Together, the duo took India to a competitive score of 465 runs. In the second innings, Kohli scored a quickfire 54, but the match eventually ended in a draw.

Why did Ravichandran Ashwin retire in the middle of the series?

Ravichandran Ashwin's decision to retire may have come suddenly, but it was a move that was being thought about for quite some time. It was first considered during the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy on home ground in 2023, but when it was discussed once again, Ashwin made up his mind, especially because of his knee which has been causing trouble for some time now. Even before leaving for Australia for the Test series, Ashwin is believed to have told his family that he was thinking of retiring from international cricket. Although no decision was taken then, his family had asked him to think about it and Ashwin is said to have said that he would take a decision after whatever happens in Australia. And on Tuesday night, he told his family that December 18 would be his last day in international cricket.

As captain Rohit Sharma said as soon as he landed in Perth, Ashwin had a long conversation about retiring before playing the second Test in Adelaide. He was also a contender to play the Brisbane Test, but Ravindra Jadeja was preferred. It is understood that at the Gabba, Ashwin told each player separately about his decision to retire in the middle of the series, which surprised everyone. Although Ashwin got a chance to play in Melbourne and Sydney, it seems that this decision has been taken keeping this in mind

This will be my last day as an international cricketer, as an Indian cricketer. I think I have some strength left in me as a cricketer, but I will probably try to show it in club cricket, but this will be the last day. I have had a lot of fun in international cricket and I must say I have made a lot of memories with Rohit Sharma and other teammates. I am the last OG (old school) in the dressing room. I want to thank the BCCI, my teammates, all the coaches.
